German Courses

The German section offers semester-long courses on a regular basis (beginner courses, basic and specialised courses, conversation), as well as short-term paid courses under lifelong learning (CŽV).

All courses including annotations and specific requirements for the courses on offer, as well as basic study materials and other information are listed in the SIS.

Beginner Courses

  • Course A1 (Winter Semester)
  • Course A2 (Summer Semester)

Beginner courses are intended for students with either zero or basic competence in German, who wish to prepare for the German. Course I. Face-to-face instruction consists of one 90-minute session a week; however, extensive self-study (approx. 6 hours a week) is required.

The basic courses are primarily intended for students preparing for the B2-level and Academic Reading exams.
The levels of the courses range from Lower to Upper Intermediate.
Basic courses typically amount to two 90-minute sessions a week.
Credit is awarded for regular attendance, active participation in class, completing the tasks assigned, passing a final test (where applicable), earning the student 3 credits.

Specialised courses develop students’ academic language competences, introducing them to the specific aspects of academic writing and preparing them for effective functioning in foreign-language work and study environments. Some courses are related to specific areas of expertise and although they are part of individual programme curricula, they are open to all those interested in the subject area.
Some specialised courses prepare students for the B2-level Exam and Academic Reading; others offer further learning and are open to all students with the required language level, including those who have already passed the exam.
The courses typically consist of one 90-minute session a week and require extensive self-study.

Conversation (Summer Semester only)

Native speaker-led courses (taught by an Austrian teacher) are held once a week for 90 minutes, typically in the summer semester.
Credit is awarded for regular attendance, active participation in class, completing the tasks assigned, earning the student 3 credits.

Exams

The Language Centre exams are designed in accordance with CEFR and internationally recognised certificate requirements.
Three basic consecutive courses of German as well as some specialised courses serve as exam preparation; however, you are not required to participate in the courses to take the exam.

General Public (CŽV)

The Language Centre can arrange courses under the lifelong learning programme (CŽV) for students of the Faculty of Arts and other CU faculties, as well as the general public, provided enough people are interested.
